You download applications (apps)
directly to your phone or through iTunes on your computer. The apps store
shortcut on your phone will display a very simple to use menu where you can
select the apps you want.
Your iPhone will come preloaded
with some free games and apps like the compass pictured below:
Most of the phones are equipped
with GPS which will enable to you find most any location in the U.S.
Here is a
sampling of a few more apps you might find useful:
Fandango ($free$) See what's playing at the movies in your area, or any other area you choose.
You can even setup a list of your favorite theaters and see what is showing at
each one, view showtimes, trailers and even purchase tickets directly online.
Free WiFi ($free$) Will show you a list of places near you that offer free wifi, including the
company name, distance from your location, their address and google maps will
show you directions to that location.
Notemaster
This is a very nice application that lets you
organize your notes along with pictures, in categories that you setup. Any or
all of the categories can be password protected to protect privacy. And you can
backup your notes and pictures by simply syncing with Google docs.
Where ($free$) This app will determine your current location (using GPS or allowing you to
enter it manually) and will show you gas stations with recent prices, current
weather, local news, etc.
Yelp($free$) Will give you specific information about any type of retail service in your
area. It will give you distance, address, phone number, directions, etc.
ESPN Scorecenter ($free$) You can customize this app so you can find out everything you need to know
about your favorite sports team, including college sports. During a game, you
can double click on the link and watch a play-by-play real time update of
the entire game:
Sportacular Pro ($1.99 or use
free version with ads) While the ESPN app above will probably be adequate for most of us, those of
you who are real sports buffs will probably be more interested in this app from
Citizen Sports. It will give you
lots of extras such as betting lines, news, stats and a really nice real time
graphical image of the play by play.
The Weather Channel ($free$) Its pretty obvious what this app does, and it does it well.
Open Table ($free$) Make a reservation to any restaurant in your area.
Google Voice Search ($free$) When you run this app, you search Google for any word by simply speaking the
word into the phone.
Copilot Live
This application (which costs $35
as 10-31-09) gives your iPhone 3G or 3Gs the full function of a GPS device. It
will do almost everything a Garmin or TomTom will do for a fraction of the cost!
Note: this is a 1.26 GB file, so it will take at least an hour or longer to
download over your computer network connection. And you should also know that
using this application will reduce your battery life to about 2 hours, so
you will need to have a charger connected or readily available.
