- Magic Jack -

You have probably seen the ads for the magic jack on television or in magazines. It received great reviews on various venues, including

The device enables you to make and receive phone calls over your high speed internet connection to your desktop or laptop computer using VOIP (voice over internet protocol). That is not new since companies such as Vonage have been selling that type of service for years. The big difference is that companies such as Vonage charge around $25 per month for residential service and about twice that per month for business service, while the Magic Jack will cost you only $19.99 for a full year of phone service! And it includes the following services at no additional charge:

  • Free local & long distance anywhere in the world

  • Free phone number

  • Free directory assistance

  • Free call waiting

  • Free voicemail

  • Free conference calling

  • Free caller ID

  • Unlisted phone number

  • Select your preferred area code

  • $19.99 per year

Important points to consider:

  • You can specify the area code, but otherwise, the number will be assigned to you at random.

  • Currently, you cannot take your current phone number with you, but that feature will be available in the future.

  • Your phone number will not be listed in any directory, even if you want it to!

  • You can have as many phone lines as you want by simply purchasing more Magic Jacks, but if you have a phone system where the call rolls to the next number if the primary line is busy, this will not work at all with the Magic Jack.

  • You can use the Magic Jack to send and receive faxes, but not if you are using an air card on your laptop.

If you visit the Magic Jack website, you will probably see a reference to connecting a cordless phone to your Magic Jack so you can use the phone throughout your home or office. In reality, it is very simple to set the Magic Jack to be connected to all the phones in your home or office. In most cases, this simply requires you to connect a standard phone cord from the Magic Jack to a phone wall outlet. This will usually connect all the phones in your home or office so they can be used just like they were when you were using your previous land line provider.

The device currently costs $39.99 at most retailers, and that price includes your first year of phone service. And it can be easily found at many locations such as Walmart, Office Depot, CVS, Walgreens, Sears, Target and Radio Shack to name a few.

And when you connect the device to your computer, there is no CD to run...the device will connect automatically to the Magic Jack website and download the drivers and the application to enable your device. This only takes a few minutes and when complete, this interface will be displayed on your computer:

You will probably be able to use your phone for 30 minutes or 48 hours, whichever comes first, before being required to register the device. You will be able to click a link on the above display to be taken to the Magic Jack website to complete the simple registration process.

The entire process only takes about 10 minutes to complete and you will have you very own phone number. Please contact me at the number below if you have questions or need assistance.
