Microsoft has recently released a free
version of a software package that is designed to protect your
computer from all types of malware, including viruses, spyware,
scareware, etc. It is free for use at home or in your business for
up to 10 workstations (not for servers). Once installed, it will
display a small icon on your lower right side taskbar that looks
like the one below. This icon will change colors to alert you if you
there is a potential threat on your computer or if the program is
not running properly:
This icon is VERY IMPORTANT! It will remain green as long as the program is working properly and no threats are detected. It will scan your computer every night at midnight and will update itself automatically. It is very important that you leave your computer on at all times so these scans can be completed daily! If a threat is detected, the green icon will turn either orange or red, depending on the severity of the threat. You MUST click the icon and then click “Clean My Computer” immediately! If you do not do so, YOUR COMPUTER WILL BE INFECTED WITH A VIRUS OR SOME SIMILAR MALWARE! You must realize YOU are your first line of defense! You MUST learn how your software works to protect your computer and take the necessary steps to clean it when necessary. Unlike the resource hog programs that cost you $40 a year or more, MSE will simply alert you of a potential threat by turning the taskbar icon orange or red.
